2009 has been good to the Durham Peewee Huskies as they went undefeated this past weekend, with 2 wins to close out their schedule.
On Saturday the Peewees travelled to Mildmay for the return match from December 23rd 2-2 tie. Mildmay opened the scoring with the only marker in the first period. The lead held until well in the second, when Logan Burgess even the game when he deposited a pass from Dylan Pust and Ryan Melanson. Durham took the lead before the period ended when Nathan Duguay redirected a shot from Cody Hollands and Dalton Stone. Duguay scored again in the third, when he banged in the loose puck from a goalmouth scramble. Colton Cook and Stone drew the assists. Mildmay rounded the scoring when they capitalized with a goal in the dying seconds for a 3-2 Durham win.
Sunday had Mt Forest in town for the final game of the schedule. Looking to redeem themselves for an earlier loss, the locals came out fast and where rewarded early when Mitch Hooper pounded in a rebound. Cook and Hollands earned the assists. Duguay continued his hot hand, as he put the home side up 2 when deposited a pass from Cook. Mt Forest cut the gap in half before the end of the period, for a 2-1 lead. The second period saw a lot of action but only 2 goals as the sides traded markers for a 3-2 lead at the intermission. Burgess and Melanson worked the crease for the tally, with Travis Hooper getting the puck to the net for Durham's goal. Mt Forest tied the score early in the third but it was short lived as the locals responded within seconds to regain the lead. Pust netted the eventual winner with solid second effort, banging in his own rebound. Burgess completed the scoring when he ripped home a pass from Duguay and Mitch Hooper, for a 5-3 final. Luke Aulthouse was very strong in goal for the Durham with two play-off style performances, stopping many quality opportunities all weekend.
The Peewee Huskies will now participate in the Shelburne tournament this weekend while they await their play-off opponents to be named.
