Christmas week was good to the local peewees as they managed to turn their consistant hard work into a loss, tie and win.
On a very blustery Sunday the Huskies traveled to Mt Forest to battle the Rams. After falling behind 2-0 early in the first, Travis Hooper popped in a shot from the slot to put Durham on the board, Sam Lawrence and Logan Burgess assisted on the goal. The locals efforts were rewarded again early in the second as Hooper notched his second to tie the score, when he slid a shot under the goalie. Lawrence and Colton Cook set him up for the shot. With score even the Huskies push for the go ahead goal but could not find mesh again, and 2 late period goals seemed to take the wind out of Durham's sails as they could not recover eventually falling 7-2.
Two days later the peewees where hosting Mildmay and a solid effort, marred only by a minute long lapse, turn into a 2-2 draw. Durham started the scoring when Burgess stole the puck, broke in and ripped a shot home. The hosts expanded the lead when Cook took a break away pass from Ryan Melanson and Dalton Stone and made no mistake beating the keeper to the blocker. The 2 goal lead should have been added to if not for the stingy Mildmay goalie, who kept his team in the game until they managed to jump on the team wide mental lapse, scoring twice in 24 seconds to even the score. Try as them did, the Durham squad could not find the twine again. On a side note the locals played penalty free in the game qualifying them for the 2009 Penalty Free Sweepstakes, we now await to see what awards the boys will get for they diligence in sportsmanship.
The first game after Christmas was in Hanover, a team that had twice defeated Durham this season. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies mauled their hosts in the second with 5 unanswered goals. The onslaught was started by Cook when he fired in a pass from Lawrence. Blake Nelson, with his first of the season, increased the lead when he backhanded home a rebound created by Dylan Pust and Stone. Nathan Duguay potted his first of two when he banged in a goal mouth rebound and then followed with a tap-in that sqeezed through the goalie. Nelson aided him on the first and Burgess and Melanson assisted on the second. Cody Hollands rounded out the periods scoring when he slammed in a shot from the face-off circle, Cook won the draw for the assist. Hanover stole Luke Aulthouse's shut-out in the first minute of the third but 2 more goals completed the Huskies feast of the Falcons for a 7-2 win. Cook potted his second of the game when he burried a pass from Hollands and Nelson and Hollands got his second from Pust to finish the scoring.
The Peewee Huskies finish their regular season with 2 games this weekend, Jan 3 in Mildmay and at home against Mt Forest on Sunday the 4th at 4:15 pm.
